My ’70s Health-Nut Parents Didn’t  Vaccinate Me. This Is What My Childhood Was Like.

I am the ’70s child of a health nut. I wasn’t vaccinated. I was brought up on an incredibly healthy diet: no sugar till I was 1, breastfed for over a year, organic homegrown vegetables, raw milk, no MSG, no additives, no aspartame. My mother used homeopathy, aromatherapy, osteopathy; we took daily supplements of vitamin C, echinacea, cod liver oil.I had an outdoor lifestyle; I grew up next to a farm in England’s Lake District, walked everywhere, did sports and danced twice a week, drank plenty of water. I wasn’t even allowed pop; even my fresh juice was watered down to protect my teeth, and I would’ve killed for white, shop-bought bread in my lunchbox once in a while and biscuits instead of fruit, like all the other kids.We ate (organic local) meat maybe once or twice a week, and my mother and father cooked everything from scratch—I have yet to taste a Findus crispy pancake, and oven chips (“fries,” to Americans) were reserved for those nights when Mum and Dad had friends over and we got a “treat.”As healthy as my lifestyle seemed, I contracted measles, mumps, rubella, a type of viral meningitis, scarlatina, whooping cough, yearly tonsillitis, and chickenpox. In my 20s I got precancerous HPV and spent six months of my life wondering how I was going to tell my two children under the age of 7 that Mummy might have cancer before it was safely removed. So the anti-vaccine advocates’ fears of having the “natural immunity sterilized out of us” just doesn’t cut it for me. How could I, with my idyllic childhood and my amazing health food, get so freaking ill all the time?

My two vaccinated children, on the other hand, have rarely been ill, have had antibiotics maybe twice in their lives, if that. Not like their mum. I got many illnesses requiring treatment with antibiotics. I developed penicillin-resistant quinsy at age 21—you know, that old-fashioned disease that supposedly killed Queen Elizabeth I and that was almost wiped out through use of antibiotics.*

“If you think your child’s immune system is strong enough to fight off vaccine-preventable diseases, then it’s strong enough to fight off the tiny amounts of dead or weakened pathogens present in any of the vaccines.”

jesus, take this as a warning protect yourselves please. please vaccinate!

Remember the Muslim group who started raising funds to help pay for funerals and medical expenses for the victims in Pittsburgh?? Well. They’re not done yet. Look at this

They have increased their goal several times and exceeded it within hours. HOURS!!

Here is their latest update

They’re asking you to please donate to their other fund, to help the victims of the shooting in Kentucky. These people are beyond amazing. They give me hope for the future and restore my faith in humanity.

Here is the fund for the synagogue

Here is the fund for the victims in Kentucky

They haven’t reached their goal with this one yet. If you’re feeling compelled to donate, please donate to the Kentucky fund. Because of everything else going on, it hasn’t gotten nearly as much attention. But these two peoples lives were just as important. They were just as loved and they will be just as missed.

And because they haven’t gotten as much attention and their stories aren’t in the news as much, here’s their story. From the fund raiser.

Please pass this around. If you can’t donate, someone who sees your reblog might.

Keep up the great work!!

PS: the fund for the Tree Of Life victims has raised an additional $11k in the past two and half hours as well. How amazing is that ?!

“omg my husband is missing please help him!”

“… wait a minute he isn’t missing, his mom says that he’s fleeing an abusive relationship and you called the cops on him.”

This fuckin’ website sometimes.

excuse me what

https://santareaper.tumblr.com/post/179565103882/please-if-you-know-anything-about-where-my-husband

I don’t even know anymore man.

Jesus christ.

I think I got tagged in that post about a million times this morning from people wanting me to signal boost it, and honestly this will sound awful, but this is why as a general rule I do not signal boost missing person posts unless they are coming from individuals I know, because honestly you just don’t know what is going on sometimes.

I had friends growing up who ran from their abusive parents and it was framed as a “missing troubled teen” narrative to get them back. More recently I had a friend who tried to leave her husband and her husband tried to tell everyone she’d lost her mind and didn’t know what she was doing and if anyone saw her they needed to send her back to him. He was bold enough to get the police involved too. Some abusers are just brazen in their confidence to not get caught.

And honestly, do I know what is happening in the above post? No, but with so many conflicting accounts and different voices, I’m hesitant to help a possible abuser splash their victims face all over the internet.

“Don’t call Trump supporters nazis, it hurts their feelings.”

Yes, this is real (link to tweet). Yes, Tucker Carlson is literally repeating Nazi propaganda that aided the genocide of the Romani during the Holocaust. Yes, I am furious.

(Also, although there is a large population of Romani in Romania, they aren’t indigenous to Romania. They’re a diasporic group originally from northern India.)

Romani and Jewish have been screaming at the top of their lungs for years about neo-fascism in Europe, and Americans were totally aloof.

Then neo-fascism reared its head in America, but Roma and Jews were left out of the conversation in terms of people being impacted, because our oppression was “over.”

Now Tucker Carlson is on live TV using slurs and Nazi propaganda about Romani people, and I’m 90% most people on the left are just going to ignore it.

It’s fucking starting y’all. It’s happening again.

If you’re not Jewish or Roma PLEASE BOOST THIS.

FOOD

  • Find your nearest food bank or mission, for food
  • grocery stores with free samples, bakeries + stores with day-old bread
  • different fast food outlets have cheaper food and will generally let you hang out for a while.
  • some dollar stores carry food like cans of beans or fruit

SHELTER

  • Sleeping at beaches during the day is a good way to avoid suspicion and harassment
  • sleep with your bag strapped to you, so someone can’t steal it
  • Some churches offer short term residence
  • Find your nearest homeless shelter
  • Look for places that are open to the public
  • A large dumpster near a wall can often be moved so that flipping up the lids creates an angled shelter to stay dry

Libraries are an amazing resource.  They provide shelter from the elements during the day, and have free internet access so you can job hunt, do research, check your messages and communicate and also seek entertainment.

PLUS many librarians are super informed about local resources and can point you towards other organizations that can help you with food, employment skills and finding affordable housing.
